Real Life American Heroes, Women's History Month: Oprah Winfrey

There is so much to celebrate in the month of March! March is Women’s History Month, a time when we celebrate women and their many contributions to society. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter established National Women’s History Week which became Women’s History Month in 1987 when Congress passed a resolution to dedicate March to hold this special time!

So many fantastic women have created, contributed, and built America and we hope to highlight a few of them. The first blog in our Real Life American Heroes: Women’s History Month features an American Journalist, actress, host, and entrepreneur, Oprah Winfrey.

Oprah Winfrey was born in Mississippi on January 29, 1954. As a young girl, Oprah was known as a “gifted speaker,” by her grandmother who raised her. She was often praised by her church, school, and other groups as a natural presenter or someone who is especially skilled at public speaking. When Oprah was in high school, she won a speech contest that awarded her a full college scholarship to attend Tennessee State University.

Oprah found an interest in broadcast journalism or a career in producing and reporting news stories on TV or the radio. While she was in college in 1971, when she was only nineteen, Oprah was asked by news station Nashville-CBS to be their news anchor. A news anchor reports the news on TV. She made history in Tennessee as the first female African-American news anchor.

Oprah continued to work as a broadcast journalist and found the attention of a news station in Chicago, Illinois. In 1986 she led her first nationwide talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show.

The Oprah Winfrey show was a huge success! She became one of the most famous people in America by interviewing actors, politicians, royals, and everyone in between. Oprah’s journalism knowledge helped her develop an original method of interviewing that became a blueprint for American morning talk shows.

Aside from her success as a talk show host, Oprah was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1985 for her role in The Color Purple.

After the production of her talk show ended after 25 seasons, Oprah created her own television company called Oxygen Media. Oprah created a charity called the Angel Network which helps children and women through grants provided to non-profit organizations that can provide care.

Oprah continues to inspire women and people everywhere. She continues to be a strong advocate for so many and in September 2002, she was named the first recipient of The Academy of Television Art and Sciences’ Humanitarian Award. In 2010, Oprah received the Kennedy Center Honor for her contribution to art and culture and received the nation’s highest honor in 2013, The Presidential Medal, awarded to her by President Barack Obama.

Oprah has said, “The whole point of being alive is to evolve into the complete person you were intended to be.” She believes that no matter how old you are, you will never stop growing and learning. Oprah Winfrey is an amazing American Hero.

It’s Read Across America Week and we could not be more excited to share SuperCaptainBraveMan stories with you!

Read Across America Week is celebrated yearly on March 2nd through March 6th and begins on the birthday of author and cartoonist, Dr. Seuss. He wrote great children’s books that you may know, like The Grinch That Stole Christmas, Horton Hears a Who!, and The Cat in the Hat!

A special organization called The National Education Association (N.E.A.) encourages people everywhere to pick up a book and read, especially kids! There are so many great events and celebrations at this time in libraries, schools, and community centers!

The SuperCaptainBraveMan Team kicked off this great time of year at Lokrantz Elementary School in Los Angeles! We were invited to read our SuperCaptainBraveMan Books to the entire school at assembly.

Hi, SuperCaptainBraveFans! This is our latest article in our continued celebration of Black History Month about real-life African American Heroes. Today, we celebrate US lawyer and Supreme Court Justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson!

Ketanji Brown Jackson was born in Washington D.C., our nation’s capital, but was raised in Miami, Florida. As a child, she had an interest in law and leadership early on in life. Her mother was a school principal and her father was an attorney. In high school, Ketanji Brown Jackson was on the debate team and was her high school class president. She attended Harvard University where she studied law and government. Ketanji Brown Jackson was the editor of the Harvard Law Review, a very important law journal! She graduated in 1996 and married her husband, Patrick Jackson.

After college, Ketanji Brown Jackson worked as a law clerk for federal judges. She worked for Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer in 1999 and spent many days doing research about cases. As an attorney, Ketanji Brown Jackson worked as a Public Defender. A Public Defender represents people who are accused of crimes but aren’t able to pay for their own attorneys.

Ketanji Brown Jackson was selected to serve in the United States Sentencing Commission in 2010 by President Barack Obama. This governing body is in charge of making the sentences of people who commit crimes fair and just. Here, she advocated for people who had unfair and harsh sentences. Real Life American Heroes: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Hi, SuperCaptainBraveFans! In honor of our continued celebration of Black History Month, we’re highlighting real-life African American Heroes. Our first Hero is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a courageous man who inspired people everywhere during a time in American History called segregation. Segregation was when people of different races, ethnic groups, and skin colors were separated in their daily lives. This law meant people of different races couldn’t go to the same hospitals, or go to the same schools, or even use the same bathrooms. This separation caused a lot of racial prejudice, or treating other people negatively because of the color of their skin.

Dr. King grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, and experienced a lot of this racial prejudice as a young boy. This inspired his life mission of achieving justice and equality for Americans of all races. Dr. King’s belief in non-violent and peaceful protest against this unjust law was adopted by people across the country to bring social change.

These protests were met with hardships. Dr. King was arrested several times while peacefully protesting segregation. Although it was difficult, Dr. King continued to fight for the rights of equality for Americans everywhere, these liberties are called Civil Rights. In 1964, Dr. King and his supporters achieved the goal of the Civil Rights Act, a law that outlawed racial segregation. This rule was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson with Dr. King by his side.

Dr. King received the Nobel Peace Prize, a high honor that is given to people who encourage peace around the world, in 1964. In that same year, Dr. King gave his most famous speech, the “I Have A Dream” speech, which was delivered at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. This helped boost nationwide support for the end of segregation. His role in the Civil Rights Movement inspired many to speak out against racial inequality. In 1968, Dr. King was shot at a hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. He passed away that same day.

Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered today as one of the best speakers in American history, a true leader of the Civil Rights Movement, and a hero for positive change. Every third Monday in January is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a day when we honor his legacy and the amazing changes he helped make to give all of us the equality we deserve.

Dr. King once said, “Injustice everywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” This philosophy, or belief, lives on in the hearts of Americans. Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Hero who continues to inspire us to stand up for what’s right.

Discovering the Magic of Superheroes: What Makes Someone a Super Hero?

Hey there, SuperCaptainBraveFans! Have you ever wondered what makes superheroes so amazing? They're not just characters in stories — they're like our very own modern-day knights with incredible powers. Let's uncover the secrets that make superheroes truly special!

Awesome Abilities: The Cool Powers that Make Heroes Super

Imagine having the ability to fly, super strength, or control the weather – how cool would that be? Superheroes have these extraordinary powers that make them stand out from the crowd. It's like having a magical toolbox to help them save the day and make the world a better place.

Think about SuperCaptainBraveMan; he can fly, has super strength, and is a friend to kids of all abilities! These amazing powers aren't just for show, they’re used as a force for good!

Super Good Choices: Doing What's Right Because It's Right

Superheroes aren't just about muscles and powers; they also have big, caring hearts. They always try to do what's right and help others, even when it's tough. This sense of goodness and fairness guides their actions and makes them true heroes.

So you can be a superhero by making sure your actions help and show kindness to others. Are you standing up for someone who’s being bullied? Are you going out of your way to be kind? Being a superhero means being helpful and leading with friendship.

Secret Identities: Ordinary People with Extraordinary Stories

Guess what? Many superheroes have secret identities – it's like having a super cool alter ego! By day, they might be ordinary folks, but when duty calls, they transform into superheroes. This dual life adds excitement and shows that anyone can be a hero, no matter who they are!

Kyle is a boy just like us, though he lives with disabilities. When he’s awake, he needs the support of special equipment like a wheelchair and a ventilator. But when he dreams, he becomes SuperCaptainBraveMan, flying across the sky to conquer challenges with other kids. It's like having the best of both worlds!

The Power of Positivity: Turning Tough Times into Super Strength

Did you know that many superheroes face tough times too? They go through challenges and sad moments, but instead of giving up, they use those experiences to become even stronger. This positive attitude is like their superpower, helping them overcome anything that comes their way.

SuperCaptainBraveMan noticed his autistic friend Nicholas was frustrated. Nicholas wanted to tell his family how he loved them, but he didn’t know how. SuperCaptainBraveMan knew he didn’t have the answers, so instead he asked other kids with autism to help guide the way. Superheroes know that they don’t have all the answers and aren’t expected to do everything for everyone else. They are confident enough to know when to let other superheroes shine.

Helping Others: Being a Hero in Everyday Life

You don't need a cape or superpowers to be a hero – anyone can be one! Superheroes teach us to help others and be kind. Whether it's helping a friend, being respectful, or standing up against bullies, these everyday actions make you a real-life superhero.

Kyle is all about doing what's right and helping others. You can be a hero too, just by being a good friend and making the world a little brighter with your kindness.

Imagination: Your Superpower to Dream Big

Did you know that your imagination is a superpower too? Superheroes inspire us to dream big and believe in ourselves. Whether you want to be an artist, scientist, or even a superhero, let your imagination soar – there are no limits!

When Kyle dreams, he imagines he can fly! His human body may have limitations, but in his imagination, anything is possible! There’s nothing wrong with the power of dreams and the potential of the human spirit. So, don't forget to use your imagination and believe in the superhero inside you!

And there you have it, my heroic friends – the magical ingredients that make superheroes so fantastic! From awesome powers and making good choices to having a positive attitude and helping others, anyone can be a superhero. So, put on your imaginary cape, embrace your uniqueness, and remember, the world is full of everyday heroes just like you!
